For 8 years, this Winnetka family walked past their backyard without ever truly living in it. Cracked concrete, overgrown grass, no place to gather. Every summer that passed was a summer of birthdays on the back porch, dinners moved inside, and a space that had no story to tell. They came to us with one ask: give us our backyard back.

We started by asking how they wanted to feel in the space — not what they wanted to build. The answer was clear: they wanted to host. Summer dinners with neighbors, their kids' birthday parties, late nights around a fire with friends. We designed three distinct zones around those moments: a full outdoor kitchen for the host, a fire conversation area for the nights that stretch past midnight, and an open lawn where their children could just be kids.

The first thing they did after we handed over the keys was host a birthday party for their daughter — 40 people, outdoor kitchen running all night, kids on the lawn, adults around the fire. They told us it was the best party they'd ever thrown. That space now gets used 4-5 nights a week through the season. The project finished 2 days early. But what they gained can't be measured in square footage.
